dancing gone wrong

Northwest Ballet School of Classical Dance

Author: Groshan Fabiola

Dear Kevin,

I offer this letter as an introduction to a lovely young woman I had the pleasure to meet some months ago. Amy is a friend of my daughter and recently spent a few weeks in our home over a summer break. Coincidentally, I was involved in our annual community fundraiser, and this dear girl volunteered to perform as part of our program. Oh, I was skeptical at first, one never knows, but I was soon duly impressed by her talent. After studying several years under your expert tutelage, I believe myself to be a good judge of ballet. This young dancer is no less than astounding.

You will see for yourself that her training has been first class from the very beginning. Her dance lessons started at age 5 where she learned to dance and develop skills she would later need for her classical dance studies. She continued training at the Northwest School of Classical Dance in 2001 under the supervision of director John Bishop. Bishop comes to the school with impressive credentials, having performed with the Milwaukee Ballet Company, American Ballet theater, and the Eglevsky Ballet. He has performed as principal dancer in Giselle, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, and Coppelia. Since, he has transitioned to the roll of choreographer and won awards in this discipline. Amy has been fortunate to have John Bishop as a mentor and to have the best of highly qualified dance instructors employed by this wonderful classical and contemporary ballet school which recently moved from Anacortes, WA to the Bellingham, WA area.

Through a comprehensive audition placement audition process, this young dancer has had extensive dance performance experience. Each year the Northwest Ballet Company produces three major productions for the enrichment and education of its students and the enchantment of sold out audiences at the Mt. Baker Theater and McIntyre Hall. Every student has an opportunity to audition and perform. With classes in barre, allegro and adagio, pointe, variations, and pas-de-duex, this performing arts dance school’s goal is to prepare students for a career in dance. Six of the students of the dance company recently competed in the St. Petersburg International Ballet Competition in Russia. This unique experience included taking master classes at the Kirov, seeing the Kirov Ballet perform and touring several Russian cultural sites... Old friend, I know you will fine Amy an excellent candidate for your school.

Dancing is the Get in Shape Workout

Author: Anthony Onaf

There are many reasons why someone will want to learn how to dance. One of the great things about learning to dance is you will get an invigorating exercise workout. If learning to dance does nothing else for you, it will get your heart pumping and may help you get into shape. If your goal is to get in shape then this mean a simple one week dance class will not do the trick. You should have at least 3 months or more dance lessons which take place 3 times a week or more for at least 1 hour or more per dance lesson.

It is important to take dancing serious and attempt to do every move with precision, oppose to a lazy dance move. You need to push yourself to get the most out of your dance workout. A good rule of thumb is if you haven't worked up a good sweat then you can assume you haven't danced long enough or you haven't worked yourself hard enough. Before you start dancing be sure you stretch your muscles.

It really doesn't matter which style of dance you choose to learn because any style will give you a good workout, regardless if it's swing, ballet, ballroom, hip hop, contemporary, modern, etc. Dancing is such a popular workout that many exercise videos and exercise dance classes incorporate vigorous dance moves into their exercise regimen.

I sometimes wonder about the history of dance and the history of exercise, which actually came first or did they both initiate at the same time since they are so closely related. I would make the assumption that dance dates much farther back than exercise because exercise is actually a health related item and the history of health & medicine (in relation to living longer) is rather young. Dancing actually goes as far back to the ancient times when people will dance to entertain the royal family.

Learning how to dance makes your exercise workout fun and entertaining, plus you will learn a skill that can give you a lifetime of rewards. You will not have to sit out or keep the wall company at the next party, nightclub, wedding, or event. Additionally, your body will be toned and in shape while you seemingly move gracefully making you command stares from the crowd.

It is very possible for anyone to learn to dance. The resources are readily available as you have the option to join a local dance class, you can get independent assistance from a dance teacher, you can learn from the comfort of your own home using instructional dance videos, or you can get books which teach you how to dance. Whichever way you learn to dance you will also learn a lot about your body.

You will soon learn that learning to dance is not just a few slick and stylish moves. In fact the more you are in shape the better you will move and the less pain you will have. If you are not in shape you will soon find out when dancing. For the first weeks you will endure pain but you must continue to push yourself to get over the pain. The pain is simply a condition of your body and muscles getting acclimated to the stress dancing and exercise puts on your body.

Once you get past the first few days/weeks of pain your body will become well adjusted and it will be natural for you to move gracefully and feel vibrant. The health benefits achieved from dancing is overwhelming and should make anyone want to learn how to dance. So my advice to you is to get out there and start dancing.

Are Street Dance Workshops A Good Way To Learn To Dance?

Author: Kevin Shwe

Every now and again a dance workshop or master class will pop up with an expert choreographer or dancer. Are street dance workshops a good way of learning to dance? Better than dance classes?

Street dance workshops are very good because you learn a lot of skills from someone who will be able to dance at a high standard and also teach you how to do it too. Often these will be expert dancers so you can learn things that you couldn't learn from an average dancer.

The thing with dance workshops is that you need to pay a lot of attention in them to get the most out of them. Many times when there is a dance master class what you hear the dance teacher talk about is as valuable as the moves they're teaching.

Getting into their mind, their mentality and their whole thinking behind the dance is what's really worthwhile in these masterclasses. This is possibly even more important than the dance moves they teach.

Street dance is a good style of dance to learn in a workshop. All dance styles require regular practise in order to get good. Street dance is not as technical as many dance styles which is an advantage if you haven't been to many dance classes. You'll probably be able to learn and do many of the moves, and a lot of it will be about learning how to add style and 'flavour' to the moves.

This is why what the dance teacher says is of so much importance. Often they'll have so much style and you can learn how they achieve it if you just pay enough attention to what they're saying when they talk.

As with all dancing, one dance workshop will not usually turn you into an expert over night. That is unless it provides the piece in the jigsaw that you'd been missing up until that point. You'll need to go away and practise what you learn in the workshop and then attend any other dance classes or workshops you can as well.

If your area does not have much street dance in it, then practising what you already know of course will be important. Sometimes it will be necessary to travel outside of your area if you really want to put in the practice so you can get even better.

Don't expect miracles from dance workshops, but go in with an open mind and you'll probably come out with some new moves and better understanding.
